I love finding a good deal as much as anyone. But one of the biggest mistakes travelers make is choosing a destination simply because the airfare is cheap.
Sometimes the cheapest flight leads to the most expensive vacation.
It’s easy to look at airline prices and decide where you want to go based on the lowest ticket prices. Sometimes, the lowest airfare may not be the best option. For example, you save $200 on your flight, but hotels are $100 more per night. Or rental cars cost more. Or parking rates are higher. Suddenly, the money you thought you saved is gone.
Before you book the cheapest flight, here are a few other things to consider:
✈️ Flight Times
The least expensive flights are often at the most inconvenient times. Personally, I’d rather pay a little more for an afternoon flight than save money on a 5:00 a.m. departure.
💰 The Total Cost of Your Vacation
Overall, the destination may not fit your budget. If restaurants are more expensive, you have to pay for parking everywhere you go, attractions cost more—hello, Orlando!—or you have resort fees and higher taxes, that “cheap” flight isn’t really saving you money. Another destination with a more expensive flight may actually cost less overall.
🏖️ Is It the Vacation You Really Want?
Just because airfare is cheap doesn’t mean it’s the right trip for you. If your dream vacation is relaxing on the beach, but the cheapest airfare takes you to the mountains, are you willing to make that trade just to save money on the ticket?
🌦️ Travel Season Matters
Airfare often reflects timing and seasonality. That inexpensive ticket may be available because it’s hurricane season, the weather is less favorable, attractions have limited hours, or some activities aren’t available.
At Havens & Horizons Travel Company, we believe the best vacation isn’t always the one with the cheapest airfare—it’s the one that’s the best fit for you. We look at the entire picture so you can make an informed decision and get the most value from your vacation budget.
