We have lived in western Kentucky for 22 years, and yesterday we saw Paducah with a fresh set of eyes.
We headed to Curls & Cream for ice cream, and because it was such a beautiful evening, we decided to park the car and simply wander through downtown.
We’ve driven through downtown countless times. We’ve admired the mural wall from the car, eaten at a few local restaurants, and walked past the shops. But somehow, we’d never really slowed down enough to experience it.
This time was different.
Instead of focusing on where we were going, we paid attention to where we were. The brick streets, the historic buildings, the locally owned shops, the people strolling along the sidewalks, and the peaceful views of the Ohio River all reminded us why Paducah has become such a beloved destination.
Along the way, we stumbled across places we’d somehow never noticed before. We wandered through Market House Square and discovered Serendipity Sip & Spa and Lepa Jewelry & Design Studio. We also found a charming little shop called With Love, From Kentucky on Broadway, filled with unique gifts, Kentucky-made products, and plenty of ideas for future birthdays and Christmas shopping.
The more we walked, the more we realized how much there was to see. Antique stores, art galleries, boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants, and little hidden corners seemed to appear around every turn. What we expected to be a quick trip for ice cream turned into one of those evenings where you just keep saying, “Let’s see what’s around the next corner.”
Ironically, this wasn’t even a Havens & Horizons scouting trip. We were simply enjoying a summer evening together. But before the night was over, we were already talking about coming back—with cameras, notebooks, and a little more time—to truly explore everything downtown Paducah has to offer.
It made us realize something. Sometimes the places closest to home are the ones we overlook the most.
As travel advisors, we’re always searching for destinations worth sharing, but this evening was a reminder that adventure doesn’t always require a plane ticket or a week away. Sometimes it’s found just by slowing down and exploring your own backyard.
If you’ve driven through downtown Paducah but never really stopped to experience it, we encourage you to do just that. Park the car, wander the streets, browse the shops, enjoy a meal, treat yourself to some ice cream, and see where the evening takes you. You may discover, just like we did, that there’s far more to downtown Paducah than you ever realized.
